New Jerseychild care ranked 17th best by Child Care Aware because its center employees go
through rigorous background checks. But home-based day care operators don’t
undergo checks and registering with the state is voluntary.
There are 38
child care inspectors who visit the roughly 4,000 centers and investigate 1,000
complaints a year. Because the state hired more inspectors, their caseloads are
100 per year, half what they were several years ago. Child Care Aware said
states should aim for 50 inspections a year per employee.
The
Department of Children and Families, which inspects child care centers,
declined to comment.
“About 66
percent of the 638,600 children age 5 and younger are in child care because
both parents are working, the report says. These are very difficult choices
between what you can afford versus what you would like it to be," said
Zalkind.
New Jersey
is home to 5,374 child care centers and registered family day care centers that
can serve 261,630 kids age 5 and younger. There are also 1,603 relative and
friend home centers approved by the state. Another 52,000 children are in Head
Start and publicly-funded preschools.
